"Red lips are so pretty but I would never wear them on a day to day."

Sound like you? Girl, then sit right down because we're about to have a lovely chat where my goal is to completely convince you otherwise!

Last month, I showed you a simple and classic way to wear a red lip for a fancy occasion. Today, here's a look I wore the other weekend for a casual day with friends. I loved how this came out!

It's the right amount of shimmer on the eyes and color on the lips. This would be perfect to wear to your Thanksgiving dinner, a friends-giving, or even a girls night in :).

Now, I know what you're thinking, "Well, sure! You can totally pull this off because you super comfortable rocking a bold lip! But I couldn't rock a red lip like that."

Would you believe it - I totally thought the same thing a few years ago! Here's how I broke the day-to-day red lip into my everyday life:

1. Start Small

I always, always, always loved the red lip look. I thought gals like Gwen Stefani and Taylor Swift were so bad-ass rocking it so often and I wanted to give it a try.

So I started small. I bought a tube of my favorite red lipstick and started with a few dabs instead of a full on lip color swipe. I blended that out a bit and the red lip became a subtle stain.

Slowly, I built the color up and up until, before I knew it, I just went for the full swipe from the tube! So don't be afraid to take baby steps to build a look that you're itching to try into your routine.

2. Go for some shine

Matte reds are GORGEOUS and so Old-Hollywood glam. They can also be incredibly intimidating! Being a fan of a satin-finish myself, I knew immediately swapping my favorite nude, MAC's Hue, for MAC's Ruby Woo would just make me feel super self-conscious.

So if you don't typically wear matte shades in other colors, then try a red with some shine. It'll feel more comfortable and won't be as dramatic of a change to try :).

3. Like Nike says...

Just do it!

Frankly, most people are so preoccupied with the way they look and feel to say anything bad about a new look that you're trying out.

Did you notice when your co-worker tried the top knot for the first time? Or when your bestie decided to give false lashes a go? How about when your neighbor chopped her hair into the Gatsby bob?

If your first thought wasn't, "Wow, that looks great!" then it was probably "Huh, that's new" and kept it moving.

When did other people's thoughts stop you from trying something that makes you happy, anyway? :) So don't worry about it! What matters is that if you love it and feel great in it, then wear it!

For me, red lips always make me feel so classic and pulled together :).

To get this look, I went shimmery and neutral on the eyes with a champagne lid color, matte brown crease, and darker brown outer corner. On the cheeks, I added a bit more shimmer with Champagne Pop. Adding the red lips gave me an all-over fall glow. Woot woot!

Now tell me - What's your take on the red lip? Do you love em or leave em?

Tori's Pretty Nails - Gobble, Gooble!

Tori's Pretty Things // 2016 Thanksgiving Nail Art
Wearing: OPI Squeaker of the House, Essie Maki Me Happy, Essie Playing Koi,
Essie Kimono-Over, HK Girl Top Coat, Essie Base Coat

I'm a sucker for a holiday tradition.

In 2005, I made this no-bake Peanut Butter pie for Thanksgiving. Eleven years later, a unique, Tori-made Thanksgiving treat can always be counted on.

In 2006, J (my bestie) and I made a night out of visiting the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. Ten years later, are holiday tradition lives on.

In 2014, I painted my first turkey-inspired nail art. Three years later, I present you with these cuties!

I used all 2016 Fall collection colors, starting with Essie's Kimono-Over, Maki Me Happy, and Playing Koi for the feathers. The pigmentation in these shades are SPOT on! They made painting turkey feathers a breeze :).

For the turkey face, I used OPI's Squeaker of the House as the base. As seems to totally be the norm in this year's Washington DC collection, this shade was beautifully pigmented and glided smooth on the nail :).

I used Playing Koi again for the beak and Maki Me Happy for that little nose piece. (Does anyone ever really know what that piece is called without googling it?! If you do -- I now nominate you as my forever animal trivia partner :))

There's one other tradition that Turkey nails  hold - It's how I say goodbye to fall nail art ;(. 2016 was a complete winner for Fall polish shades and formulation. But, you know what they say...

Tori's Pretty Life - October 2016 Recap

Tori's Pretty Things // Autumn in New York
Palisades Parkway, NY - October 2016
I am an extremely private person.

(As I sit here writing about my hobbies and life, putting it out there on the world wide interweb...)

It's true, though.

I'm usually not one to offer up information about myself unless asked. When I am, more often than not, I'll give you a quick, "All is good!" and turn the conversation back to you.

It's nothing personal and usually - everything is good! I'm just a true, solid introvert and keep my life, heart, and opinions to a very select and close few. (If you're part of that select few, you know exactly who you are :).)

That said, it's really important that we build a home here at TPT. A cozy little nook where you can rely on constant creative content that feels organized, inspirational and achievable in your world :).

So I want to turn this house into a home and add in a few personal touches.

Introducing Tori's Monthly Recap. On a mostly monthly basis (give or take a few weeks), you can expect a post like this. You'll find a photo recap of this month's past posts plus the other in's and out's of my daily life.

I promise you. some months will probably be incredibly boring! But then we have months like October where, I didn't realize until putting this together, how many great opportunities I had a chance take part in :).

So, without further ado, here's what happened in my life this past October...

October began with a long-weekend trip to Philly, where B and I were so happy to celebrate the wedding of our two friends :).

We did a little bit of exploring, a little bit of brunching with another great friend, and a lot of celebrating! It was such a beautiful wedding and lovely time :).

I'm a really big fan of walking. Exercise is so much easier to stick to when it does feel like a chore! I took many long walks in October and saw a bunch of pretty, fall things along the way :).

As the month progressed, B and I took a lovely stroll together through Central Park before sunset. That night, I enjoyed my first Yom Kippur breaking of the fast with B and his family :).

Then, the baking urge struck! I whipped up a batch of Pumpkin Spice donuts and ate them for a week straight :).

I also tried Colour Pop Lip products for the first time to satisfy the need for some bright, new fall lip colors. See the full post here!

B and I ate a few delicious brunches, like the one in this post, and enjoyed more NYC foliage :).

Then my two very best friends made the day-trip into Manhattan and we adventured to the top of the Empire State Building.

Of course, October wouldn't be complete without a few Halloween nail art designs! First, I went with a spooky calico cat .

The last week of October was a whirlwind. First, B's company gave us tickets to the Jazz Foundation of America's annual Jazz gala. I am a HUGE fan of Jazz and really believe in this foundation so this event is just everything to me!

There were about a dozen extremely talented performers. The four big-billed acts were Bruce Willis (yes, THAT Bruce Willis...), Dr. John, McCoy Tyner, and the John Mayer Trio. I can only say one word about this event - Phenomenal!

Then, the next day, we hopped in our Zipcar and drove to West Point, NY. We celebrated a long weekend of fall foliage and another great friend's wedding!

If you haven't experienced Upstate New York's foliage and you're a fall lover like me - then you need to start planning your trip! Those mountains.. those hues.. that crisp air...ah, just perfection :).

The next night was the wedding itself. It was such beautiful occasion, so full of happiness and love :). We had a great time! Here's the full post on the makeup look I wore to the festivities.

The coolest centerpiece!
We headed back to the city that Sunday and breezed down the Palisades Parkway. (Can I get an internet high-five for no traffic?!)

On the way back, we made a quick pit stop at the Hudson River lookout to take one last look at those gorgeous views.

Halloween fell on a Monday this year. With the fun wedding festivities, I decided to forego the costume this year and instead stick with festive nail art! Here were my final Halloween nails for the season :).

Phew! Turns out, October was a super busy and super fun month :).

Tori's Pretty Outfit - Orange Blanket Scarf

Tori's Pretty Things // Orange Blanket Scarf
Wearing: Orange Blanket Scarf (sold out - Similar), White Blouse (old - Similar),
Purple Jeggings (old - This year's version), Watch (Exact), Booties old - Love these too!
I like my Thanksgiving dinner like I like my blanket scarves - warm and comforting with a few pops of color!

The orange blanket scarf was a total impulse buy. I saw it and thought, "It looks like fall - MUST OWN!" :)

Turns out, though, that it's so much more versatile than I expected. It works great with your standard black or white tee but also pairs so well with burgundy, navy and red. Woot woot! You'll see the main way I wore it, plus a couple of other options, below.

It really goes to show that you just never know what part of your wardrobe will become a staple piece! I'm even considering wearing the red look again for Thanksgiving.

Speaking of, I just picked out a few Thanksgiving recipes I'm aiming to make and bring with me to my Mom's house. (Luckily, she doesn't read this so she can't tell me not to bring anything ;) )

I'm feeling ambitious so my goal is to make this, this, and this. Any suggestions for how to travel with them on a train, though?

I'll keep you posted if the execution (and transit!) are a success :).

Now tell me - what does your thanksgiving have in store?
